Richard Howick

Richard H. Howick was born in Mount Kisco, New York, and grew up in New Jersey. Both of his parents, Eugene George Howick and Henrietta Anna Bernard, were natives of Mercer County, Ohio. A strong interest in living things prompted him to major in biology earning a Bachelor’s Degree from Boston University and a Master’s Degree from Colby College, Waterville, Maine. Upon graduation from college, he married Clare L. Daley of Shelton, Connecticut and they have two adult daughters. After teaching high-school biology for thirty-six years in Maine and Massachusetts, he retired in 2000.


During his teaching career, he has coached soccer and basketball at Belmont, High School and in community youth programs. Banjo playing has been a passion during his adult life, coupled with an interest in a variety of music, especially roots (folk) music. In addition, he has completed extensive genealogical research over a period of twenty years and is the author of The Early History of Center Township, Mercer County, Ohio 1834 – 1863. He resides with his spouse, Clare, in Belmont, Massachusetts.
