Death/Memorial Card Collection of the German-American Communities of Southern Mercer County Ohio (1884-1999) Vol. 2

by Allen W. Bernard

This collection of death/memorial cards commemorate the lives of a significant number of late nineteenth− and twentieth−century residents of southern Mercer County, in particular those from the villages of St. Henry and Maria Stein. Cultural artifacts of the region, they are testament to the county’s German− Catholic culture as well as to the art of design and printing at that time. The collection contains sentimental depictions of religious figures as well as symbolic emblems of death and resurrection, images that supported family members in times of grief and, as art, elicited deep emotional feelings.
